You’ve probably seen the badge of approval from the Clean Energy Council (CEC) on our website, and you may be wondering what it means. This post will run through each category of CEC endorsement, and why it matters.
What is the Clean Energy Council
There are three categories of endorsement from the CEC:- Membership
- Approved Retailers
- Accredited installers
Clean Energy Council Membership
Membership is open to all businesses regardless of their industry. There are five tiers of membership:- Associate
- Corporate
- Sponsor
- Network
- Emerging Tech

Although a company may advertise being a member, it doesn’t guarantee customers the benefits or quality that accredited installers or approved retailers can offer.

Clean Energy Council Approved Retailers
The CEC Approved Retailers is voluntary program, and it requires businesses to sign and adhere to the CEC Solar Retailer Code of Conduct. This program is authorised by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and is a way for solar retailers to show their commitment to ethical sales and marketing activities and industry best practice.
The CEC Solar Retailer Code of Conduct aims to protect the customer pre-sale and post-sale, as well as ensure the customer is provided with required documentation and are granted time to cancel contracts and request refunds.
To further ensure quality and protect the customer, Approved Retailers must also:
- Provide a five-year warranty for the entire PV system
- Only use CEC Accredited installers
Clean Energy Council Accredited Installer
Unlike the other two categories, accreditation is awarded to individual solar designers and installers. The application process for accreditation is lengthy and aims to ensure that each individual practitioner understands the ins and outs of a solar PV system and how to design and install it.
Using an accredited installer to install your solar panels ensures not only the quality of your solar PV system but also reduces the initial cost of solar as you are eligible for Small-scale Technology Certificates (the technical term for government rebates).
