Auswell Energy shares when and how to clean your solar panels.
Despite the sometimes unpredictable weather, Queensland has the highest rate of rooftop solar in Australia, with 1 in 3 homes using solar. If you have a solar system in Brisbane, you know this occasional wild weather and general wear-and-tear can result in dirt and debris on your panels. It is important to ensure that your solar panels are clean and unobstructed, as this can affect the amount of power they collect. In doing this, however, you must also clean your solar panels properly to avoid damaging your system. Below we outline the best way to clean solar panels, and how often you should do this.
What tools do I need to clean my solar panels?
This depends on the amount or type of debris obstructing your panels. For minimal debris or dirt, you may only need a garden hose. You may also choose to use a soft sponge, cloth or brush. Isopropyl alcohol can also be handy on tough stains. If you’re unsure if your chosen cleaning tool is appropriate, contact Auswell Energy: we’re the experts on solar systems in Brisbane.
How do I clean my solar panels?
Firstly, you may find that spraying your panels with a ground-level hose does the trick. If not, and you are able to safely reach where your panels are installed, there are a few different cleaning methods you can use to remove more stubborn debris. If you are unable to access your solar panels safely, you will have to hire a professional.
It is important to make sure you do not scratch or damage your solar panels while cleaning, so firstly try gently buffing away marks with a soft cleaning tool and water. If you require soap, we recommend not using any harsh cleaning chemicals – make sure to use a detergent that is recommended for solar panels and follow the instructions. If marks remain, remove them with another soft cloth and isopropyl alcohol.
When do I clean my solar panels?
Clean solar panels mean optimal energy absorption, so periodically checking that your solar panels are unobstructed is important. In general, we recommended doing a thorough clean about every 6 months to keep your panels in tip-top shape. However, if your panels are visibly soiled, or if you have experienced a significant weather event, they should be cleaned as soon as possible.
We also recommend cleaning your panels in the early morning or late afternoon. Cleaning them during the middle of the day can result in the water and cleaning products evaporating too quickly, resulting in streaks or residue.
